Just because the holiday season Is over doesn't mean the spirit of Kwanzaa can't last all year round. At least that's what local author Keesha McMillian tells me. Keesha, along with her mother Pat McMillian. who works at the Commis- sion for Catholic Community Action, and her sister Valeric McMillian, who runs the program Youth that Cook.
have put together a guide to help families Interested In learning about observing this African tradition. The McMilllans also were part of a recent Kwanzaa celebration with the sisters at the Congregation of St. Joseph. St Joseph Sister Juanita Shealey, known for her radio show "God's Saving Word." hosted the celebration which encouraged attendees to live the seven Kwanzaa
principles in their dally lives—Umoja, unity, Kujichagulla, self determination, Ujima, collective work, Ujamaa, cooperative economics. Nia, purpose, Kuumba, creativity, and Imani, faith. "I hope everyone took with them a clear understanding of the need to practice these principles in their lives," Keesha McMilltan said.
